Lower Body Muscles Anatomy

Major muscle groups of the lower body:

  • Quad muscles: 

    • Middle Quads

  • Hamstring muscles:

    • Main Hamstring
    • Upper Hamstring 
    • Lower Hamstring 

  • Glute muscles:
    • Gluteus Maximus
    • Gluteus Medius
    • Gluteus Minimus

  • Calf muscles:
    • Gastrocnemius
    • Soleus

Quad muscles: 

These are the most powerful muscles of our lower body, these muscles help you to stand, run and move around with your legs. And it also helps to extend your knees and flex your hips. The Quad muscles are grouped as follows,

    • Middle Quads: The Rectus Femoris or the Middle Quads is located in between the outer and inner Quads.

    • Outer Quads: The Vastus Lateralis muscle or the Outer Quad muscle helps to stabilise and hold your Knee-cap while you are moving around. 

    • Inner Quads: Inner Quads are the only muscles that cross both the hip joint and supports in extending your knees. These muscles are grouped as follows,

      1. Vastus Medialis 
      2. Vastus Intermedius
Hamstring Muscles: 

These muscles are located in the posterior part of your thigh, these muscles are easily susceptible to injury and most of these injuries heal without any surgery, they play a vital role in bending the knees and straightening the hips.

  • Main Hamstring: It is also known as Bicep Femoris. It is grouped by two muscle fibres namely,
    1. Lond head
    2. Short head
  • Lower-Inner Hamstring: Lower-inner Hamstring is also known as Semimembranosus, Its primary action involves internal rotation of knees. This muscle can be found in the lower part of your Hamstring.

  • Upper-Inner Hamstring: Upper-inner Hamstring is also known as Semitendinosus It is located in the posterior and the medial aspect of the thigh. It helps in the extension of your thighs, supports rotation of the Tibia and flexion of knees. 
Glute Muscles: 

The Glute muscles are located in between your lower back and Hamstrings. The Glute muscles are three groups of muscles namely Gluteus Maximus, Gluteus Medius and Gluteus Minimus. The major function of these muscles includes extension, abduction, external rotation and internal rotation of hip-joint. 

  • Gluteus Maximus: It is the largest muscle responsible for the shape of your entire Butt. 

  • Gluteus Medius: The function of Gluteus Medius is to help in the rotation of the leg and the stabilization of the Pelvis. 

  • Gluteus Minimus: It is the smallest of all the three Glute muscles. It supports rotating our lower Limbs and keep the Pelvis stable while moving.
Calf Muscles: 

The Calves are located in the lower-back part of your leg's. Calves are essential for walking, running and jumping. It generates the final push during the toe-off phase to people up and forward. 

  • Gastrocnemius: It is the upper-outer calf muscle and is the large muscle forming the bulge and shaping your Calves. 

  • Soleus: It is the smaller part of the Calf muscle that lies underneath the Gastrocnemius muscle.
